Stephen Bruns founded Bruns Architecture in 2008 with one simple goal – to create pure, meaningful designs that would translate into well-crafted structures. By combining careful listening, rigorous research, strong relationships and innovative thinking, Bruns Architecture strives to improve their spatial surroundings, delivering thoughtful, sustainable, lasting architecture. Bruns came across recycled tyre rubber as a construction material some years ago and, recognising its advantages, opted to invest in this innovative material, putting it to good use in three projects so far.

A number of Bruns Architecture’s constructions have benefited from recycled tyre rubber’s use as a roofing material in as much as their exteriors are clad in synthetic slate tiles made from the material. But just what was it about this unusual material that captured the firm’s interest to begin with? Its unique texture, for one thing. Bruns explains:

“What we liked most about the material was its texture, since these were tiled applications. That and the silvery shimmer it generates when the light reflects off its black surface, which creates a mosaic effect. Of course, as a roofing material, we also appreciated the durability it offers on the vertical surface too.  It’s a very easy material to work with, since you can install it much like you would any slate or cedar shake roof.”

Recycled tyre rubber has met with very positive reactions from the firm’s clients, and Bruns Architecture now keep samples in their studio to combine with other materials when presenting the holistic palettes they use in their projects.

Every Bruns Architecture project receives a special measure of attention, and the firm enjoys developing close relationships with its clients – learning who they are and how they live and work. Investing time in making sure they understand their clients’ needs, ambitions and dreams is a key aspect of Bruns’ approach to design.

“Through this process of discovery, we distil the essence of the project. The resulting vision becomes an invaluable tool that guides the design and construction process. We believe our holistic approach is what sets us apart,”
